With rams, my philosophy has always been to handle them a lot—I never turn my back on them, but I generally trust them enough not to ram me. However, in Frank’s case, no pants are safe.

Lambing season is almost here—and preparation makes all the difference. 🐑
One of my goals this year is to share more about how we raise our animals and to better explain why we do things the way we do—hopefully with more videos along the way. I’m not always the most coordinated or organized (RIP to the phone that ended up in a water trough 😅), but I’m making an effort to do better.
With lambing right around the corner, I wanted to share a few things we do to prepare.
Quick disclaimer:
The way we do things is not the only way and definitely not the gospel. We’re always learning and improving, and there are many incredibly talented and more experienced shepherds out there. This is simply what’s working for us right now.
With that said, here’s what I’m prepping in our lambing kit. Our girls typically lamb late at night, so I like to have something I can grab and go. Most of these items are kept inside for sanitation reasons—and to keep things from freezing.

Every year Mitchell and I sit down and plan the year ahead. (Yes believe it or not all of this chaos is planned). For the farm we have been using this Old Fashioned on Purpose planner from @jill.winger and notebooks from @battenkillbooks. They have become extremely handy for us - it easily adpats to our needs and it has space for everything. My only critique would be the cover is really flimsy and doesn’t last all year intact…but that could be just an us problem.

Quick Easy Recipe for our chicken strips and bits
Pat the chicken dry with a paper towel
Dredge in some flour and spices - whatever you have on hand I used garlic, salt, pepper, and paprika
Then put them in egg and some milk or water
Finish in some breadcrumbs or panko I add some garlic to the mix
Place on a baking sheet
Cook at 400 degrees for 20-25 mins

Taking a quick chicken-packaging break for one of my favorite simple pleasures — one of our bagels toasted with cream cheese and hot chili oil 🔥 I usually make my own chili oil (nothing from the store ever hits quite hot enough 😅), but time’s been short lately. Something a little different happening in the wool room: we’re tanning hides! 🐑
When we process an animal, we try to use every single part — and that includes the hides. I’ve been teaching myself how to tan, starting with a hair sheep cross. They’re not as soft or fine as our wool crosses, so if I mess this one up, it won’t be quite as heartbreaking.
Right now, I’m in the pickling stage — getting the hide ready before adding any tanning solution. Still undecided on the final method, but it’s the perfect rainy-day project.

💀 Gross “fun” fact: every animal has a big enough brain to tan its own hide… but don’t worry, we’re not going that route!
